Looking for a super cool summer job in the field of technology? Are you all about science and technology? Would work with cutting-edge ultra-low temperature cooling systems and curious people be awesome? Do you want to be a part of progress and success? If yes, then Bluefors could be the place for you this summer and these would be a perfect summer work for M.Sc. students in physics.

Our Quantum Applications team (QAT) is now looking for a Trainee for an active, ongoing project on optimization of control and measurement of superconducting qubits to support the great growth story of ours. Position in this team will support your studies and helps you to gain work experience in the field of high-tech product manufacturing while enhancing your future career plans.

In the QAT you will be working on theoretical and computational modelling of quantum noise induced by cryogenic control circuitry within the framework of optimal quantum control. The core of the work will be predominantly theoretical and computational, although in constant interaction with the experimentalists in the QAT.

To succeed in this role, you are a M.Sc. student in the field of physics with an open-minded, curious, and positive attitude. You already have knowledge of quantum physics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and basic solid-state physics. You are familiar with standard Python packages, have positive, hands-on attitude and eagerness to learn. You have good communication and collaboration skills, as well as the ability to work independently. We expect you to be genuinely proud of what you do, and you do it meticulously.

The QAT team is a tight group of passionate professionals from different backgrounds and nationalities, and this is a great opportunity for you to develop yourself as a future professional. Our work language is English on daily basis and position offers you a great opportunity to improve your strong communication skills even further.

Key aspects in this project include
• Understanding how different timescales stemming from multiple cascaded components contribute to the spectral density of the resulting noise
• Investigating the impact of the noise on the qubit dynamics by formulating an open quantum system description that goes beyond the standard models
• Determining the direct implications for quantum algorithms in terms of circuit depth and error-correction requirements, assuming realistic operation conditions
• Envisaging efficient control strategies and/or components to improve key performance figures of control hardware for quantum processors

What we expect from you
• M.Sc. student in physics
• Knowledge of quantum physics, with emphasis on the density matrix formulation
• Knowledge of electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and basic solid-state physics
• Knowledge of standard Python packages (NumPy, SciPy)
• English language skills
• Open-minded, curious, and positive attitude
• Hands-on attitude and eagerness to learn

We also appreciate
• Knowledge of basic quantum computing and quantum control theory
• Basic knowledge of microwave physics and/or engineering
• Knowledge of QuTip
• Ability to work independently
• Good communication and collaboration skills
• Quality oriented and meticulous approach to work

At Bluefors we’re all about continuous development, learning and collaboration in our international environment (we have people from almost 50 different nationalities!) and we always welcome new, uprising talents. You’ll be encouraged by your team, and you will learn from the best minds in your field. Our head office is in Pitäjänmäki, Helsinki and your exact starting and ending dates can be discussed.

All the positions will be filled as soon as we find the perfect candidate, so be quick! Fill in the application on January 31, 2024 at the latest at BLUEFORS.COM in English, with your application letter and CV included. The recruitment process will include a video interview and a face-to-face interview at our premises. Come and be part of the progress!
